Fake Check Internet Scams

Internet Scams

The fake check Internet scams come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Here’s how a typical one works.

You list something for sale online at eBay, Craigslist, or some other buy-and-sell site.

The buyer sends you a check for more money than the purchase price, asks you to cash the check, ship the article, and refund the excess money from the check by bank wire.

The buyer is really running an Internet scam. He’s hoping you’ll ship the item and wire back the extra money before your bank notifies you that the check you just cashed is a forgery or was drawn against a closed account.

Be very suspicious if you get a check for more than the sales amount. Chances are you’re being played in an Internet fraud game. And never ship anything to a buyer until you know the funds received are actually genuine.
